Amazon Web Services is expanding its cloud computing business by launching a new center that will focus on developing AI. The $100 million investment, which will be made over five years, will be used to develop new applications that can help businesses improve their productivity and efficiency. The Generative AI Innovation Center is being led by Deepak Yalagandula, vice president and general manager for AWS Canada East.

It’s also worth noting that Microsoft has been making investments in AI research as well; last month it announced plans to invest $2 billion over five years into generative AI research at Microsoft Research and other parts of its organization.
The investments in AI are just one piece of Microsoft’s overall strategy to grow its cloud business, with the company spending billions of dollars on new data centers and other infrastructure over the past few years. The company recently announced plans to open a new Azure-focused data center facility in Dublin, Ireland; that facility will be operational by 2020.
Amazon has been making big strides in the public cloud space over the past few years, with its AWS business growing at a rapid pace; it’s now one of the top three providers of infrastructure services globally. Last week, Amazon announced plans to open a new data center facility in Frankfurt, Germany; that facility will be operational later this year.
The launch of the new center comes at a time when many AI startups are struggling to find their own funding. Investments in the space are expected to slow in 2019, according to CB Insights, which tracks venture capital and private equity deals.

The AWS Artificial Intelligence Center will be led by Dr. Eric Brown, who joined the company in September 2018 after a decade as a professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). He is also the co-director of CMU’s Robotics Institute. In November 2018, Brown published a paper in Science with his colleague Professor Andrew Moore, which outlined some of the challenges and opportunities for AI research over the next decade.
While AWS does not disclose its revenue, analysts estimate that the cloud computing giant generated $25 billion in sales last year. At the same time, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform are both growing at a faster rate than Amazon Web Services (AWS). This could be due to their ability to offer more flexible pricing options for customers or simply because they were first-movers in the space.
The center is being led by Deepak Yalagandula, vice president and general manager for AWS Canada East.
Yalagandula has been with AWS since 2014 and previously worked at Cisco Systems, Microsoft and IBM. He holds a PhD in computer science from the University of Waterloo and has worked on the development of Amazon’s artificial intelligence platform. He’s also an expert in cloud computing and serves as a member of Canadian Cloud Council.
The expansion of the Toronto-based AWS office comes as Amazon is set to open a new data centre in Montreal later this year and has plans for another one in Alberta. The company also announced it would be adding 700 new jobs in British Columbia, bringing its total workforce there to more than 1,000 people.
